Film genres: which are the most popular in Iran and the world?

Iran and the worldFilm and TV series1401 (2022/23)

A film genre or kind means a category of films that have a shared story, atmosphere and conventions: comedy makes one laugh, horror frightens, mystery creates a question. On this page we first say what a genre is, then with fresh data we show which genres the Iranian audience in cinema and home video really turns to, and at the end we introduce all the main film genres one by one with examples.

Summary: The highest-grossing genre of Iranian cinema today is comedy; in the first seven months of 1405 (2026/27) nearly sixty percent of tickets for Iranian films have been sold for comedies. Thirty years ago this share was less than ten percent and social and war cinema turned the box office. In the world, drama is the most-produced genre and half of the films registered on IMDb have the drama tag.

What is a genre?

Genre is a French word meaning "type" and "category." In cinema it is said of a group of films that are similar to one another in subject, story structure, characters, atmosphere and overall mood. When we say a film is "horror," the spectator knows in advance they will face suspense, darkness and fear; genre is a kind of contract between the filmmaker and the audience.

These classifications are not definitive. Most films are a combination of several genres (for example romantic comedy or crime drama) and some films also do not fit in any specified mold. Platforms and festivals too each have their own list of genres; for this reason a film may be registered as "drama" on Filimo and as "social" in the cinema yearbook.

Genre, form and audience: three different things

  • Genre is about content and atmosphere: comedy, horror, crime, science fiction.
  • Form or format is about the manner of making: animation, documentary, short film. An animation can be a comedy or an adventure.
  • Audience rating is about the target spectator: children and adolescents, family, adult.

In practice most sites and platforms bring these three together in one list; we too in what follows introduce them all.

Which is the most popular film genre in Iran?

The answer differs depending on where we look: the cinema box office, home video or global production. The data below have come from Namafar Watch dashboards.

Today's box office: comedy is first by a margin

On the basis of sales data from the SAMFA (cinema box office system) system, from 1 Farvardin (March–April) to 24 Mehr (September–October) 1405 (2026/27) about 8.6 million tickets have been sold for thirty-eight Iranian films in the country's cinemas. Each genre's share (each film's main genre) of this sales:

GenreShare of tickets sold (1405 (2026/27))
Comedy57.9%
Mystery16.2%
Drama11.4%
Children and adolescents8.1%
Melodrama4.7%
Sacred Defense (Iran–Iraq War)1.2%

The highest-grossing films of this interval also confirm this same picture: "Khanom Valedeh" (comedy, about 1.7 million tickets), "Zendeshoor" (mystery, about 1.4 million) and "Estakhr" (comedy, about 1.3 million). The high share of the mystery genre is almost entirely from this one film "Zendeshoor."

Three decades of the box office: how comedy took the place of social and war

The Statistical Yearbook of Iranian Cinema has recorded the number of admissions of each film from 1364 (1985/86) onward. If we separate films that have at least one of their tags as "comedy" or "war/Sacred Defense (Iran–Iraq War)":

DecadeComedy films' share of admissionsWar and Sacred Defense films' shareLeading box-office genre
the 60s (1360s / 1980s)10%18%Social
the 70s (1370s / 1990s)9%16%Social
the 80s (1380s / 2000s)35%10%Social
the 90s (1390s / 2010s)49%4%Comedy (tied with social)

In the sixties and seventies, social, action and war films held the box office. From the eighties comedy rose and in the nineties it took almost half of cinema admissions. The highest-admission films of the years 1398–1401 (2019–2023) are also mostly comedies: "Motreb," "Dynamite," "Enferadi" and "Texas 2." In this same period the share of war and Sacred Defense (Iran–Iraq War) films went from about one-fifth of admissions to less than five percent. The yearbooks of 1402 (2023/24) and 1403 (2024/25) have brought this trend to its peak: in both years about three-quarters of admissions of Iranian films sat through comedies and "Fasil" (1402 (2023/24)) with 7.4 million admissions became the highest-admission film in the history of this statistic. In 1404 (2025/26) this share returned to 57 percent. See the details on the Cinema Yearbook dashboard: screens and admissions.

Home video: satisfaction with action and crime is higher

In home video the picture differs. In Filimo's catalog of about 90 thousand works, the average user satisfaction (percentage of positive votes) for each genre is this:

Genre on FilimoNumber of worksAverage user satisfaction
Action10,41192%
Crime4,88389%
Drama9,94488%
Adventure1,89786%
Family1,67783%
Biography1,00581%
Comedy5,89979%
Documentary4,31676%

That is, comedy sells the most cinema tickets but in home video, users give a better vote to action, crime and drama. Satisfaction is not the same as the amount of viewing and this table does not say which genre is seen more. In data that Namafar took in 1401 (2022/23) from Filimo votes, the family genre with more than 4.5 million votes was the most popular (the most popular film genre in the public's view). See the full catalog on the Filimo dashboard: films and series.

In the world: drama is the most-produced genre

Of about 420 thousand films that have a registered genre on IMDb, each genre's share is this (each film can have several genres, so the total is more than one hundred):

GenreAll films of the worldIranian films
Drama52%50%
Comedy24%14%
Thriller13%4%
Action12%4%
Romance12%7%
Horror9%1.5%
Crime8%6%
War2%5%

Iranian cinema on IMDb (about 5 thousand films) is more drama-centered than the world average. Thrill-oriented genres such as thriller, action and horror are very scarce in it, while the war genre has a larger share. The full data is in the IMDb dashboard: world and Iranian cinema.

Types of film genres

In what follows we introduce the main genres with their English names, features and examples. The order is roughly from the most popular genres in Iran.

Comedy

Comedy is among cinema's earliest genres and its aim is to make the audience laugh and entertain them. Laughter is built through verbal jokes, exaggerated situations, misunderstandings and physical gags, and more than any other genre it relies on the actor's skill. Its important subgenres are situational comedy, romantic comedy, black comedy (laughter from grim subjects) and social comedy. Comedy is today Iranian cinema's highest-grossing genre; "Motreb," "Dynamite" and "Khanom Valedeh" are box-office examples of recent years.

Iranian comedy genre

Social

A social film narrates society's problems and harms: poverty, living on the urban margins, addiction, divorce, child labor, the generational gap. The closeness of these stories to real life draws the audience in. This label is seen more in Iranian classifications and on global lists it usually falls under "drama." Social was Iran's top box-office genre until the 90s; "Just 6.5" directed by Saeed Roustayi is a box-office example of this genre.

Iranian social genre

Drama

Drama is the most-produced genre in world cinema. Drama films are serious, focus on characters and their relationships, and rely more on emotion and inner conflict than on excitement or laughter. Drama is not the same as romance; a drama story is not necessarily romantic. Most of the acclaimed films of Iranian cinema, such as the works of Asghar Farhadi, are dramas.

Drama genre

Melodrama

Melodrama is an emotional narrative that deliberately targets the audience's feelings. Characters are simpler and at times stereotypical, and the story turns on love, marriage, separation, sacrifice, and moral and family issues. For that reason most scenes take place in the home. Melodrama is one of the most-watched formats of Iranian series.

Melodrama genre

Family

A family film is made for all members of the family to watch, and its content is suitable both for children and for adults. The story is often told around a family and its relationships. In home video, where viewing is more collective and family-based, this genre has a special place; in 1401 (2022/23) Filimo data it had received the most user votes.

Family genre

Action

Action is full of physical conflict: fights, chases, shootouts, explosions and stunts. A fast rhythm, constant camera movement and a hero who must defeat the enemy are among the signs of this genre. Action is one of the highest-grossing genres in world cinema and on Filimo has the highest average user satisfaction, but it has a small share of Iranian cinema production.

Action film genre

Adventure

An adventure film takes the hero on a perilous journey: a treasure hunt, the discovery of unknown lands, escape from traps. Its difference from action is that the story's axis is the journey and discovery itself, not conflict. In Iranian classification this category is also called "hadeseh-i" (incident); adventure was Iranian cinema's second most-watched genre in the 60s and 70s.

Crime and police

A crime film deals with crime, criminals and uncovering the truth. The hero may be a detective, a police officer, a lawyer or a journalist, or the criminal himself; gangster films such as "The Godfather" belong to this same genre. "Police" is a sub-branch that is narrated from the law-enforcement point of view. Crime is one of the genres with the highest user satisfaction on Filimo.

Crime genre

Mystery

A mystery film takes the audience along with the main character to solve a secret: a murder whose killer is unknown, an unexplained disappearance, a world whose rules are not clear. Clues are revealed little by little and the ending is usually surprising. "Inception" by Christopher Nolan and "Shutter Island" by Martin Scorsese are well-known examples. In 1405 (2026/27) "Zendeshour" showed that mystery can also be a box-office hit in Iran.

Mystery genre

Thriller

The thriller is built on suspense and tension. The main character is constantly in danger and the end of the story is postponed again and again, so the audience stays on the edge of their seat until the end. The thriller is often combined with crime, mystery or action. On IMDb it is the world's third most-produced genre, but it is little made in Iranian cinema.

Thriller genre

Horror

The main element of a horror film is fear. Murder, ghosts, exorcism, magic, monsters and psychological disturbance are among its common subjects, and dark spaces, sudden sounds and ambiguous images are its tools. It has subgenres such as psychological horror, slasher and supernatural. Horror has devoted fans worldwide, but in Iranian cinema it accounts for only about one and a half percent of films.

Horror genre

Science fiction

Science fiction depicts the future, space, new technologies, time travel and extraterrestrial beings, and is built on a foundation of science, however imaginary. This genre is more than a hundred years old and combines easily with action, adventure and horror. "2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Matrix" and "Interstellar" are well-known examples.

Science fiction film genre

Fantasy

Fantasy, like science fiction, builds an unreal world, but without offering a scientific justification for it: magic, legendary creatures and imaginary lands. The "Harry Potter" series and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy are complete examples of this genre. Many famous fantasies have been adapted from novels (films adapted from fantasy novels).

Fantasy genre

Romance

The story of a romance film turns on the relationship of two characters and their effort to reach each other: meetings, separations, obstacles, and friends who help or spoil things. Romance is often combined with comedy (romantic comedy), drama or historical. James Cameron's "Titanic" was for years the highest-grossing film in cinema history until "Avatar," also by Cameron, broke its record.

War and Sacred Defense (Iran–Iraq War)

A war film deals directly or indirectly with war: battle, captivity, resistance and the consequences of war for people. Many of these films are epic and rest on real events. In Iran the "Sacred Defense (Iran–Iraq War)" sub-branch deals with the Iran–Iraq War. This genre in the 60s had nearly one-fifth of cinema admissions, and today its box-office share has reached about one percent (decline in the share of the Sacred Defense genre).

Iranian war genre

Historical and epic

A historical film reconstructs past events and figures, and its epic version is accompanied by vast scenes, military campaigns and heroics. Making these films is expensive because they need period costumes, sets and special effects. "Muhammad: The Messenger of God" and "The Kingdom of Solomon" are Iranian examples.

Historical epic genre

Biography

A biography film narrates the life of a real person: a scientist, an artist, an athlete or a politician. Sometimes it tells the whole life and sometimes only a fateful period. On Filimo there are about a thousand biographical works and user satisfaction with them is high.

Children and young adult

This category is more an audience rating than a genre: films that are made for children and adolescents and can be comedy, adventure or fantasy. Iran's children's cinema has a distinguished record, and in 1405 (2026/27) about eight percent of cinema tickets were sold for films in this category (share of the children and young adult genre in Iranian cinema).

Animation

Animation is in essence a form, not a genre: creating the illusion of movement by displaying still images in succession, whether hand-drawn, puppet or computer. Animations can be comedy, adventure or even drama. Feature-length animations are among the world's highest-grossing films and on Filimo they also form the largest part of the catalog. "Yuz" is among the recent box-office animation hits of Iranian cinema.

Animation genre

Documentary

Documentary is also a form: a film that, instead of a fabricated story, records and narrates reality; from nature and history to people's lives and social issues. Documentary itself has many subgenres, from investigative documentary to portrait documentary.

Musical

In a musical film, song and music are part of the narrative; characters sing instead of some of the dialogue and sometimes dance. This genre is almost never made in Iranian cinema, but it has an important place in Hollywood and Indian cinema. "La La Land" is among the most successful musicals of recent years.

Western

The Western is among the oldest genres of American cinema and shows life in the Wild West: cowboys, sheriffs, horseback riding, six-shooters and small towns in the heart of the desert. A large part of classic cinema is Western, and John Ford and Sergio Leone are among the most renowned Western filmmakers. Fewer Westerns are made today.

Western genre

Hybrid genres

Most films do not stay in a single genre. Several common combinations:

  • Romantic comedy: a romantic relationship with a cheerful tone and a happy ending.
  • Black comedy: laughter from the heart of grim subjects such as death and crime.
  • Crime drama: crime as the setting for human conflict.
  • Science-fiction action: battle and chase in a futuristic world.
  • Psychological horror: fear from the character's disturbed mind, not a monster.

In the Statistical Yearbook of Iranian Cinema too, combinations such as "social, adventure" and "social, comedy" have been among the most-watched tags.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular film genre in Iran?

In cinemas, comedy; in the first seven months of 1405 (2026/27) comedies have sold nearly sixty percent of Iranian-film tickets. In home video, the family genre has had the most Filimo user votes, and action and crime the highest satisfaction.

Which is the most-produced film genre in the world?

Drama. Half of the films registered on IMDb have the drama tag, and comedy at about one-quarter is second.

How many film genres are there?

There is no fixed list. IMDb has twenty-eight genres, and Iranian platforms such as Filimo and Cinematicket each have their own list; in Cinematicket data more than seventy genre tags are seen. The main genres are the same ones that appeared on this page.

What is the difference between drama and melodrama?

Drama relies on character and realistic conflict; melodrama deliberately exaggerates emotions, and its characters are simpler and its story more sentimental.

Is animation a genre?

More precisely it is a form, because it indicates the method of making, not the content. But most platforms list it alongside genres.
